Students from Penn's Integrated Project Design (IPD) program and Northwestern University's Engineering Design and Innovation (EDI) program came together to participate in the second annual IPD/EDI Design Challenge in October.
During the challenge, students collaborated with leaders from the Center for Health Care Innovation and Penn Medicine to address the prompt: How might we encourage physicians and staff to make healthy choices in the hospital cafeteria? Students moved through an entire design process in only 24 hours- conducting contextual inquiry, brainstorming solutions, creating prototypes, and iterating on ideas in participatory design sessions.
Interventions recommended by students at the conclusion of the event included developing an ordering app for staff that would provide nutritional feedback after food selections were made, and providing healthy food in eat-on-the-go packaging to cater to the busy schedules of physicians and staff.
Recommendations are currently being reviewed by IPD and Penn Medicine leadership for possible implementation in the cafeteria at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
