Austin Kilaru is an active scholar in the T-GAPP program. He graduated from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He then completed his emergency medicine residency at Highland Hospital in Oakland, California, where he served as chief resident. He returned to the University of Pennsylvania for a fellowship in health services research, where he earned a master's degree in health policy research. Dr. Kilaru's research focuses on improving the value of acute unscheduled care. He seeks to innovate new models for delivering care that offer patient-centered alternatives to hospitalization and improve continuity by connecting emergency departments with outpatient care and social services. He also studies policy and payment innovations to improve value, with a focus on opioid use disorder and cardiovascular illness.
